Tomato "Bleeding Heart" is a stunningly beautiful, collectible bicolor tomato variety. It was bred by the famous American breeder Brad Gates (Wild Boar Farms, USA) and released in 2016. Despite its dramatic name, the variety is named after the flower of the same name (Dicentra spectabilis, commonly known as the bleeding heart) due to its elegant shape and striped coloration.
Main Characteristics of the Variety
- Bush type: Indeterminate (tall). In greenhouse conditions, the plant grows up to 1.8–2 meters and higher. The stem is strong, but the bush itself looks quite slender and elegant, with regular-type leaves.
- Ripening period: Mid-season. Fruiting is extended and continues until the end of the season.
- Pruning and training: It is recommended to grow the plant with 1–2 stems, with mandatory suckering and reliable staking or trellising.
Fruit Description
- Color and shape: The fruits have a neat round-heart or elegant heart shape with a pointed tip. The coloration is incredibly festive: crimson-red stripes and streaks "bleed" and spread from the blossom end across a bright orange or honey-yellow background.
- Weight: The average fruit weight is (individual specimens can grow up to 200–250 grams). A single cluster usually sets 4–6 neat fruits.
- Taste qualities: The flesh is gel-like, buttery in texture, and bicolor — yellow with bright crimson swirls in the center. The taste is gourmet, very sweet, with a distinct mild fruity aroma and a pleasant aftertaste.
- Usage: An ideal salad variety for fresh consumption and culinary decoration. It also makes vibrant, uniquely colored thick juices and sauces. It is not always suitable for whole-fruit canning because the skin is tender and the flesh is very juicy.
