Sonnenherz (Sun Heart)
()
30-day lowest price:
The Sonnenherz tomato (meaning “Sun Heart”) is a relatively new, high-yielding collectible tomato variety of the German-bred “oxheart” type. It has gained popularity thanks to its unusual two-tone coloring, sweet flavor, and excellent flesh texture.
Key characteristics of the variety
- Growth habit: Indeterminate (tall-growing), reaching up to 1.7–1.8 meters in height. The plant has a fairly open, airy structure and light foliage.
- Ripening time: A medium-early to mid-season variety. It has a long fruiting period.
Fruit description
- Shape and weight: Large, rounded, heart-shaped fruits with slightly pronounced ridges or “shoulders” near the stem. The average weight is 250–350 grams, although individual fruits on the lower trusses can reach 450–500 grams.
- Color (bicolor): When fully ripe, the fruits turn a bright golden-orange or yellow, with a delicate pink-red blush and streaks. The flesh is also multicolored when cut—bright yellow with attractive pink marbling in the center.
- Flavor: The flesh is very firm and meaty, with few seeds and minimal watery gel around them. The flavor is rich, very sweet, with almost no acidity, pronounced fruity notes, and a pleasant aroma. The flesh is protected by a fairly thin but sturdy skin
