The "Kazakh Plum" (Kazahskaya sliva) tomato is a legendary heirloom collection variety from Kazakhstan with a history spanning over 70 years. Breeders and gardeners highly value it for its exceptional taste, meatiness, and high productivity.
Main Characteristics of the Variety
- Bush type: Indeterminate (tall, vine-like). Depending on growing conditions, the height ranges from 1.5 to 1.8 meters. The plant is vigorous and requires mandatory training, suckering, and secure staking.
- Ripening time: Mid-season variety.
- Growing conditions: Performs excellently both in protected ground (greenhouses) and in open garden beds under plastic covers.
- Yield: Above average, with stable and prolonged fruiting. Typically, 3–4 large fruits set per cluster.
- Resistance: Features good immunity to major tomato diseases and resilience to adverse weather conditions.
- Description of the Fruit
- Shape and weight: The tomatoes are shaped like large, plump plums. The average weight varies from 150–250 g, but with proper care, individual specimens can reach 400 g or more.
- Color: Deep, classic red.
- Flesh structure: The flesh is dense, very tender, "watermelon-like" on the cut, and meaty, with practically no wateriness. One of the main advantages is the extremely small number of seeds.
- Taste: Rich, full-bodied, sweet, with a pronounced traditional tomato aroma.
- Culinary Use
- The variety is considered versatile, but due to its sugary and dense structure, it is particularly popular for:
- Drying: Arguably one of the best varieties for making sun-dried tomatoes due to its high solid content and minimal seed cavities.
- Processing: Ideal for thick homemade sauces, pastes, ketchups, and rich tomato juice.
- Fresh consumption: Thanks to its superb flavor, it is perfect for summer salads and slicing.
